CES 2009 : New Netbooks, Laptops from Asus

CES 2009 : New Netbooks, Laptops from AsusAsus also introduced New line of Netbook and Laptops. Asus introduced a number of new laptops at CES 2009. Among them are an ultraportable that runs like a race car (the Lamborghini VX5), a tablet PC (the Eee PC T91), and an even slimmer, sleeker netbook. We can say that the high-style Lamborghini VX5 is a premium machine. The VX5 is largely black, with yellow highlights inside and a whole lot of Italian leather stitched into the carbon-fiber chassis.

Other highlights include a backlit keyboard/mouse combo and an ambient-light sensor akin to what you see on the MacBook Air. Revving underneath the hood (and you think I’m just being metaphorical…when you powered up the VX3, you’d hear a car roar) is an Intel quad-core processor, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, room for two SATA hard drives, and "the latest GPU."

Besides being able to run Windows Vista on its 16-inch, 1920-by-1080-pixel display, the VX5 also offers an ExpressGate mode; this Linux shell boots up in 8 seconds and provides access to the most basic multimedia and online functions. Among the other features are a 2-megapixel Webcam, a TV tuner, and 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR support. That’s saying nothing of the wireless broadband built into the device, and the fact that it is WiMax-ready.

Asus’s second model, is the S121, technically isn’t a netbook. Nor is it a further refinement of the already-refined N10Jc, according to Asus. The less-than-an-inch-thick metallic frame with leather trim houses a machine that attempts to fill the void between netbook and notebook. While the S121 does have an Atom processor, nobody will mistake it for a budget box after a look at its 12.1-inch, LED, active-matrix TFT, 1280-by-800-pixel display (presented with edge-to-edge glass) and its roomy 128GB solid-state drive. the S121, Asus claims, can survive upward of 10 hours on an internal and external battery working together.

The S121 could be a great, lightweight (about 2.6 pounds), road-ready companion. But it will be facing a lot of stiff competition in the coming year, from, say, the surfacing of a new tweener class of portables using everything from nVidia’s Ion platform to Via Nano processors and whatever else AMD has to show off.

The other big laptop coming from Asus’s stables is the only one clinging to the Eee name: the Eee PC T91 Tablet. Think of it as a touch-screen variant of the 8.9-inch, 901-series models that broke out on the scene in 2008. This hybrid netbook operates the same way as full-blown convertible laptops do, offering a screen capable of rotating 180 degrees. The T91 will offer built-in GPS functionality, a TV tuner, and an FM transmitter. It has the potential to be one well-rounded, affordable, portable entertainer.

So here you are and more to be revealed this week with CES 2009.

iMacs Before Christmas Season

image

There are rumors that Apple will also introduce refreshed 20 and 24-inch iMacs before year’s end. If true, new iMacs would be in keeping with earlier rumors that they would see spec bumps alongside the introduction of the new MacBooks.

More likely there will be more upgrades on their existing and 24-inch models, including processor bumps in keeping with the updated Montevina-based chips currently shipping in new MacBooks. Another likely change is the move to better, Nvidia-branded graphics cards in all models, replacing the ATI Radeon 2400 and 2600 HD cards currently in use. Nvidia has clearly become a supplier of choice for Apple, and their presence in all Apple notebooks provides strong evidence that we’ll see them in Apple’s desktops, as well.

I just hope that the changes will not jack up the price.

Apple Enabled GPU Hardware Decoding of h.264 as per Mac Rumors

Apple Enabled GPU Hardware Decoding of h.264 as per Mac Rumors

According to Mac Rumors, the latest MacBooks might have an unannounced new feature: GPU-accelerated h.264 codec decoding.

According to anecdotal evidence, the new aluminum MacBook’s processor runs around 75% slower when playing back 1080p movie when compared to a last-gen MacBook Pro with the Nvidia 8600M GT.

That makes sense: the MacBook’s built-in 9400M chip is designed to support offloading video decoding to the GPU. But it’s nice to see confirmation; more over, it seems to hint that we’ll be seeing a lot more high-definition content on iTunes, sooner rather than later.

MSI: Wind Coming to Major Retailer, New Models Coming Soon

image

There will be a new MSI Wind with following specification

  • The Wind U100 will be available at a national, and very large retailer in the coming week. The Wind with a 3-cell battery and Windows XP will be priced at $399.
  • MSI will expand the Wind product line with a business-focused Wind U120 (or what he kept calling the Wind 2). The Wind U120 will have a whole new look, SSD and hard drive options, and 3.5G connectivity. It will hit the U.S. in late November or December and will be priced under $600.
  • Linux netbooks are returned 4 times as often as ones that run Windows XP.
  • The Wind Desktop will be brought to the U.S. in the coming months.

Here are some of the question which was tried to be answered by MSI’s Director of U.S. Sales Andy Tung

The Wind U100 has been a global hit. Can you share anything about its success?

It seems as though brick-and-mortar retailers have been hesitant to stock netbooks or have even ignored them, at least until now. Why do you think that is?

You mention the return rates being high. Has that been the case with the Wind as well?

Interestingly enough, we struggled with the Linux version of the Wind U90. Are there plans to tailor a Linux OS for the Wind?

Part of MSI’s business plan has been to team up with other OEMs and let them rebrand the Wind under there name. What is the business model there?

On the shelves then, what will differentiate the MSI Wind from the rebranded models?

Some individuals still struggle to buy a Wind U100 with a six cell battery through e-tailers such as Amazon.com. Have you caught up on production of the system and the batteries?

There have been rumors of a nine-cell battery. How much runtime do you expect that to bring to the Wind?

Is there anything about the original Wind you wish you could improve?

Are the plans then moving forward to expand the Wind product line?

What types of specifications will the U120 or Wind 2 have?

Any plans for a dual-core Atom processor in this version? Or mobile broadband?

Any idea of the pricing of the U120?

Any plans to release the Wind Desktop in the U.S.?

With Lenovo and Samsung entering the market with 10-inch netbooks, how do you differentiate the Wind?

The Wind in some ways has made MSI more of a household name. Has the success of the Wind impacted MSIs core notebook business in any way?

Another reason why buying at this time of netbook is still necessary, There are lot of choices coming out.
